Join Southwest Airlines as a Data Science Engineer Intern to support data engineering pipelines and collaborate on real-time projects within the Technology Department.

Your Role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Monitor and maintain data engineering pipeline components and container-based services using UIs, SQL, PL/SQL, Python, Tableau, and Alteryx
  • Work as part of the production support team to ensure product configuration meets client requirements
  • Test and troubleshoot data pipelines using sample and live client data, automating tests with Jenkins, Python, and Java, and parsing logs for next steps
  • Utilize Kubernetes/OpenShift dashboards to diagnose issues and ensure service health
  • Support implementation immediately after go-live and collaborate with the implementation team for support transition
  • Work with data providers to clarify requirements and remove roadblocks
  • Drive automation in daily activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

About You

The company is looking for candidates with:

  • Progress towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Cybersecurity, or related field
  • Currently enrolled full-time student status with 1-2 semesters remaining preferred
  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Knowledge of engineering science and technology principles
  • Ability to apply design techniques and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with SQL syntax and relational data models preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and visualization preferred
  • Exposure to or experience with Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) preferred
  • Classroom or industry experience delivering group presentations preferred
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Must be at least 18 years old with a valid U.S. Social Security Number
  • U.S. citizenship or current authorization to work in the U.S. required; no sponsorship available
  • Ability to work remotely from eligible states (excludes certain states and Puerto Rico)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly pay range of $25-$29 based on degree progress
  • Potential stipends based on eligibility and program criteria
  • Full-time, 40 hours per week commitment from May 19 to August 7, 2026
  • Free, unlimited space-available travel privileges for the intern (taxes and fees may apply on international travel)
  • Interns provided with required equipment such as a laptop
